A pan-changing approach at Fissler: Quality manufacturer now relies on water-based coatings.
Idar-Oberstein, June 18, 2021. The premium cookware manufacturer Fissler is now using a completely water-based and thus resource-saving coating process. For now, this applies to all non-stick coated frying pans and woks manufactured in Germany. In doing so, the traditional company from Idar-Oberstein is meeting the needs of its consumers, who attach particular importance to sustainable production when purchasing frying pans.
From the consumers' perspective, sustainability is becoming increasingly important. In a consumer survey conducted by Fissler, 72% of respondents stated that they are increasingly opting for sustainably produced frying pans. The premium cookware manufacturer continuously optimizes the production of its products and has made it its mission to play a pioneering role not only in terms of quality but also in terms of sustainability. In a first step, Fissler has made the production of coated frying pans and woks more resource-efficient.
In the production of cookware, surface coating is crucial, as it makes the products non-stick, scratch-resistant, and temperature-resistant. Fissler will be using a new coating process in the future, where solvent-based coatings will be completely replaced by water-based coatings. Previously, this was only possible for the inner coating of Fissler's non-stick coated frying pans and woks. By consistently using water-based coatings, Fissler can significantly reduce solvent consumption in the future and, according to its own statements, simultaneously reduce its CO2 emissions by about 70% annually compared to processes with solvent-based coatings. Further optimizations in the CO2 balance are achieved by the new plant technology at the production site in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach, for example, through higher efficiency in coating application, which reduces the consumption of paint, water, and cleaning agents and significantly lowers aluminum waste. In conjunction with the longevity of its products, this has a positive impact on the environment. The German Federal Ministry for the Environment supports this project as part of the Environmental Innovation Program, which underlines Fissler's commitment to the environment and "Made in Germany" quality.
The switch to water-based coatings currently applies to all non-stick coated frying pans and woks manufactured in Germany, including, for example, products from the successful Adamant® series or the innovative Levital® Comfort frying pans. This accounts for approximately 80% of the manufacturer's frying pan and wok offerings. However, this is only a small first step for Fissler on the path to making its processes and products more environmentally friendly.
